I call to her from the yard each morning. She coos at my blossoms and asks for a part of me. She steeps me in her teapot and drinks me all day. And when her mind wanders to work, I ask her to give me legs. I am Borage, carrier of Courage and food for native bees. I ask to walk among you.
Los Angeles artist Jessica Rath has been asked by her land companion, the plant Borage, to make plant pants—Borage, Milkweed and Purple Tansy portraits drawn directly on vintage and thrift clothing. Aiding and abetting in the nomadic plant cause, Matrushka has made a series of pants and blouses for Jessica to work on.
Jessica Rath is an artist, educator and land steward based in Los Angeles and the Missouri Ozarks. Her work has been featured in ArtForum, Art in American, Xtra and the Smithsonian. A survey of her work, “fruiting bodies,” opens at Descanso Gardens in November 2019 and her current land work, Farm Unfixed, was recently the subject of RootSimple podcast.
