“The best color in the world is the one that looks good on you.” -Coco Chanel |
What is one word to define your personal style?
Chances are the word “colorful” may not be at the top of your list. Although black is chic and sophisticated, nothing says confidence like a pop of color!
Adding color to your outfit is a surefire way to showcase your personality or highlight your mood but it needs to be done in the right doses or it can be overwhelming. So how do you create a wardrobe that expertly mixes colors into a neutral palette?
Here are 5 ways to do just that:
1. KEEP IT SIMPLE
Choose one of the primary colors: red, blue or yellow and then select a hue from that palette. Select a colorful, solid piece or accessory and match it with a head to toe black outfit and you have successfully showcased yourself in a way that says “I am stylish” and “I am here!”
2. OPT FOR A CLASSIC CUT WITH A FUN PRINT
By choosing a dress that has a simple cut like a classic wrap dress or Matrushka’s signature Veronica Lake style, you can highlight your figure in all the right areas without having to overload on the accessories. If you choose a unique floral print, chances are the dress itself will serve as a great conversation starter at any cocktail party or networking event!
3. GO MONOCHROMATIC
If you’re really feeling bold, try dressing from head to toe in a single color. Our yellow or green coveralls matched with an espadrille or scrappy sandal in the same color are a perfect example of a way to make a bright statement that shares your current elated state with your environment.
4. SELECT COLORS IN EITHER A WARM OR COOL COLOR PALETTE
If you’re at the point where you want to start pairing color pieces in your closet, finding palettes of colors that work well together is the next step. If you want to create an approachable, inviting, happy vibe with your look select reds, yellows and oranges which are all warm. If you’re going for a more calming look, choose cool hues from the blue, green and purple family. Fun fact: cool hues are scientifically proven to bring about a more passive reaction in the brain which can make a person feel pleased and relaxed in your presence. Something to think about for the next big meeting with your boss or that first date you’ve been looking forward to all week. . .
5. ADD A BURST OF NEON
Try adding one bright neon item to a light shade outfit of white, grey or camel. For example, a neon tee shirt paired with white jeans is an instant classic! Not ready to commit to a neon clothing piece just yet? Try a neon belt with white jeans and a v-neck tee for a more subtle take on this trending look.
As you can see, adding color to your closet is actually not as overwhelming as it seems. By starting off with a color wheel and a few adjectives that describe the range of your personality, you can easily come up with a palette that will allow you to create looks that authentically reflect what you are feeling inside.
