Meet Laura Howe

Matrushka Designer and Owner

I came to Los Angeles with nothing but a scholarship to USC and a dream to become an artist.

I come from a family that believes in the importance of honing a craft and sharing it with others. My English grandmother was a seamstress and meticulous dresser and had a profound influence upon me. After many years, I’ve grown into a clothing designer, art patron and entrepreneur. I believe strongly in the holistic benefit of making dresses within our community – by the people, for the people. It gives us a sense of pride and accomplishment right here in Silver Lake and in the larger sense of community.

At Matrushka, we provide something almost no one else does: hand-made clothes that can be altered on the spot! It’s all about simplicity and great fit. Clothes should look great, be comfortable, and give you confidence for every occasion. In our shop, if you don’t find your size, we will make it for you.

I love to work personally with my clients to make the outfit perfectly compliment the best aspects of their unique body and style.

The Highest Dedication to Craftmanship

Female owned and operated, Matrushka has developed a loyal following over the last 15 years because of our commitment to quality, originality, and relationship with our customers that is second to none.  Every piece is designed, cut, sewn and sold right here in Silver Lake, and every piece can be tailored to your exact needs.

Meet the women who made your dress.

What I like best about Matrushka
I enjoy the variety of styles, colors and textiles that are used in making the garments at Matrushka.

About myself
I am from El Salvador in Central America. I came to this country 33 years ago. I started sewing when I was 13 years old but had made my first dress when I was just 7 and the rest is history!

What I like about living in LA
What I like most about living in Los Angeles and this country is that it has given me the opportunity to learn English, which I greatly appreciate. As a result many doors have opened for me and have given me the chance to communicate with all kinds of people from different backgrounds and cultures.

What I like best about Matrushka
Matrushka gives Los Angeles an opportunity to support Silverlake in a authentic way. It’s a boutique that not only supports the community but supports the art of handmade clothing. In the world of fast fashion, Matrushka will always be a classic.

About myself
Raised by a single mother who taught me design at an early age and growing up in LA has molded me into a multi-hat wearing female. On any given day you can find me snapping photos of models, making essential oils, building a website all while eating soup.

What I like about living in LA
I’m an LA native raised in Silverlake, Echo Park and around central Los Angeles. Living in LA is a great place to people watch and a great place to explore. I don’t know any place where you can get served corn from an “The Elote Man” who stands outside a parking lot to serve corn smothered in mayo, cheese and spice and has a 5 star review on Yelp and then drive around town to the west side where you’ll run into a beautiful dream drag queen. It’s definitely a melting pot of vices.

I like Matrushka because not only is it a local company with sustainably made beautiful garments but it is also woman owned and operated.

What I like about Matrushka
The clothes are beautiful and made by a wonderful local artist, and each garment feels individual. The Matrushka clothes I own have grown up with me and have lasted till present day. They were made with such a good eye; I think what’s in fashion at the moment is irrelevant when you’re wearing a Matrushka dress because it simply always looks good.

About me
I was born and raised in Silverlake, and am currently majoring in English at University. I have interned at Matrushka for the past two summers. Matrushka has been a part of my neighborhood life ever since I can remember, and all my favorite clothes are from there. I love film, reading, and sewing.

What I like about living in L.A.
It is a sunny, weird, wonderful place that has great food, art and music. Also, it has the most beautiful light for photography ever!
