Leila Elliott and Ted Ridgeway are a wife and husband collaborative team, using poetry, short stories, and illustrations to tell tales full of mystery and humor, usually of the dark variety. Leila is also one of the founding members of Matrushka.

Leila has studied numerous prose and poetry traditions, ranging from classical English sonnets to the contemplative writings of Mexican nun Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz. The poems here are inspired by the precision and directness of the haiku form, yet depart from the traditional subject of nature, to instead ask questions for our societies and offer observations of the internal worlds of individuals.

Ted has studied a range of classic techniques of figurative art, and draws from illustration traditions ranging from Edo era Ukiyo-e prints to lifestyle magazine illustrations of the 1950s and 60s. The drawings here use Leila’s poems to describe small moments that might exist in the worlds suggested by the text.

Prints and books will be available for sale.

Framed $300
