Hi everybody! I’m Laura Howe, designer and founder of Matrushka, and I want to welcome our many new friends while giving a virtual hug and high-five to our longtime clients. If you’re wondering who made those funky, cheerful masks you bought – well, you’re about to find out!
And speaking of masks – your purchases have enabled us to donate free masks to a skilled nursing unit in Rancho Cucamonga, CA; a healthcare center in St. Louis, MO; a Veterans Administration hospital in Los Angeles, CA; and so many other places. Thank you for helping these hard workers stay safer!
Our line of masks is new, but we’ve been selling clothes since 2002. The boutique is small and customers are used to stopping by and saying hi while I sew dresses or make alterations in the back.
Like my English grandmother, herself a seamstress, I emphasize slow fashion (as opposed to a big factory churning out cookie cutter items) and sustainability. She may not have used those terms, but she didn’t like to be wasteful and neither do I! For example, most of our fabrics are designer end cuts that would otherwise be discarded. And when I go downtown to search the fabric shops in Los Angeles, I’m careful not to purchase more than I need.
Your Matrushka purchase may be OOAK (one of a kind), or 14-of-a-kind, or 20-of-a-kind! You can feel good knowing that you have something special made in a slower, more thoughtful way than you’ll find at a big box retailer.
We make each item to order – we can even take your measurements and create something just for you! Our tiny staff includes a few highly skilled, talented women, including our master seamstress, Reina, who has nearly three decades of experience sewing.
I am proud to offer fair wages and safer working conditions to my employees. It’s the right thing to do, and I wouldn’t do business any other way.
We hope you’ll shop our incredible and ever-changing line of dresses, jumpsuits, pajamas, tops, and more. Follow us on Instagram – sometimes I have a random exciting idea and only make one or two of them, and we sell them ASAP. Look out for our upcoming #MatrushkaStorySale every week EXCLUSIVELY in our Instagram stories starting Thursday, May 21!
If I can be of service in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us. And when your item arrives, know that it was designed by Laura (me), cut by Leslie, sewn just for you by Reina, and shipped by Christine!
Thank you for being here. I hope you treat yourself or someone you love to something beautiful today!
